Could It Be Magic...? A Halloween story...

I’m not gonna lie, I’m a bit jealous of that drink.” The barmaid winked at Laars, who smiled blandly back at her. She’d made plenty of passes at him during the first week of freshers but Laars had barely noticed. His mind had always been on the dark-haired, dark-eyed beauty that he now happily called his best friend.
And that was a good point. He was supposed to be meeting him here, like, now – and yet, he was nowhere in sight. What the hell was going on? Where was he? He’d promised that they’d turn up together so neither of them felt silly in their fancy-dress get-up.
And Laars couldn’t deny it, he felt very silly in his get-up without Saul at his side to laugh with. Still, it was what Saul wanted to do and he wasn’t about to let him down – not when it seemed to mean so damned much to him. It was the biggest event of the semester other than the Christmas Party at the end of term.
Laars had never been into such things before he’d come to uni, but somehow or other, Saul’s enthusiasm for this Halloween party had rubbed off on Laars and he couldn’t deny that he was quite excited to be here and was kind of stoked with the spooky theme. He was dying to see what Saul was going to wear.
Laars smoothed his hands down his Lycra leggings, nervously. He’d dressed up as a red devil and was sporting a pair of bright red Lycra leggings with his red trainers, a bright red skinny rib top and had finished off the look with a pair of red horns. It was basic but it was the best he could do in the time.
He looked around the room. It was absolutely incredible just how much effort the committee had put into decorating up the SU bar. Cobwebs hung down from the ceiling with creepily realistic spiders dangling from them precariously.
There were what appeared to be moving eyes in the walls all around the room and the ceiling was lit up with millions of tiny lights that looked like the stars. All the blinds had been pulled up at the windows to show off the very full moon. It was, in a word, magical.
Feeling a little less silly now that more and more students were turning up, all in just as ridiculous outfits as the one he was sporting. Since he’d been waiting the room had filled up and Laars was now surrounded by a couple of ogres, plenty of zombies, some rather dubiously dressed witches, a few ghouls, some well-dodgy looking devils and then some terribly dressed people that hadn’t tried at all.
George, on the other hand, had gone all out and looked like a real horse. Heaven only knew how he was holding up the body of his costume and God only knew where his real legs were. If Laars didn’t know better, he would swear that George was actually magical. “How the hell did you get into this costume. Forget that – where the hell did you find it?” he asked as George ordered a pint and looked at it dismally, or rather, the horse’s head that seemed to be able to talk, did.
“I didn’t want to be all sparkly and bright for Halloween,” he explained, “I wanted to look badass for a change.”
Laars nodded, “Well, you managed that.” he said, “A demon horse.” He deadpanned, “I can honestly say that I’ve never seen one.”
George snorted rudely, “Philistine.” He muttered before trotting off.
Laars turned towards the door, just knowing that he was going to see Saul there and he wasn’t disappointed.
Holy shit. He’d gone all out to look absolutely stunning.
His jaw dropped as Saul started to walk towards him. Holy hell… Well, it looked like he’d planned his outfit for months in advance. It was perfect. He was dressed as a black cat. His skin-tight body suit, sporting a sleek, black tail that seemed to waver behind Saul like a real cat’s tail would and the air seemed to crackle around him with some sort of magical force. Hell, it was lighting up the space he was walking through with an eerie green haze… His cat ears looked real, as did his whiskers and the prosthetic facial make-up was unbelievably realistic. There was no mistaking the eyes however, even if they did look more like the shape of his own – that would probably be down to the amazing make-up job. Laars would recognise Saul’s eyes straight away even if there were a million cats in front of him.
Their eyes met and Saul’s face lit up into the most delighted smile that Laars had ever seen. Oh, God. He wanted nothing more than to kiss those luscious lips. Maybe he would later, once they’d both had a couple of drinks to loosen them up… A dark corner, Saul’s favourite cocktail or two and then he’d make his move… He walked over, his legs feeling ever-so-slightly wobbly at the turn his thoughts had taken. The effect that Saul had on him was sometimes a little alarming.
“Hi.” He said huskily, “You look awesome.”
Saul beamed at him, “Do you like it?” he asked, his voice going up in delight, “I made it all myself.”
Laars’ eyes roved over his friend’s body. He’d made it himself? Wow. And good lord, he looked sexy. Trust him to have come to the Halloween party as a black cat – and to even have a moving tail.
Saul’s lips twitched when he broached the subject but he was remaining oddly cagey about the whole thing. There was definitely something that he wasn’t telling Laars.
He narrowed his eyes and looked at Saul suspiciously, “What’s the trick?” he asked.
Saul’s eyes widened in surprise, “There’s no trick.” He said indignantly, “I’m just really good with a sewing machine.”
Laars snorted, “And that enables a tail to waver behind you, apparently of its own accord, does it?” he asked sarcastically. And where the hell is the green, hazy light coming from?
Saul smiled sweetly, “It’s called invisible cord for a reason. I’m controlling the movement. Every time I move my arms, it pulls on the cords and they move the tail. It’s quite simple, really.”
Laars was quite sure that Saul wasn’t telling him the whole truth, but he really had no other explanation for any alternative. It was just because it was Halloween – made all the spookier by it being a full moon.
His mother had told him to stay indoors tonight but there was no way on this earth that he was going to listen. Miss out on a party when his gorgeous friend was going to be dressed to impress? And where alcohol was going to be drank in copious amounts? Hello? That was code for kissing and then some… Well, hopefully it was, anyway. To be honest, Laars would settle for the merest of kisses, just to know, for sure, if Saul was as into him as he was to him…
With his heart in his mouth, he leaned in to Saul, “Fancy a cocktail?” he asked.
Saul’s mouth curved up in the sexiest smile Laars had ever seen on another human in his whole life. Holy shit. Never had he felt so totally out of control of his emotions. It was like magic or something. Saul had bewitched him. It was the only logical answer… “I’d love one.” Saul said.
Laars grinned. Taking Saul’s hand in his, he pulled him over to the bar, “Come on then, my beautiful pussycat,” he said in a low voice, “let’s go and get one.”

Coming Soon...

I was fuming. It wasn’t even my turn to be putting the jet skis away but I’d been stuck with the job because San Antonio and Seth were playing hide the sausage in the treehouse again. And seriously. They were taking the piss. Everyone was on board with their romance these days. They really didn’t need to sneak off for a quicky all of the goddamn time… Mum was quite accepting of Seth staying over these days. How things changed…
I’d just taken the last one in when I noticed a couple of guys hanging around on the boardwalk at the side of the houseboats. I frowned and ducked inside the sheds that housed the jet skis and motorboats so I could watch them. No one was supposed to be here after hours, so what the hell were they doing?
A moment later, one of the houseboat owners, Nicholas, appeared. He’d arrived here a few years ago and was a pretty friendly, if private sort of a guy. Put it this way – Mum hadn’t been able to find anything out about him. He approached the two guys and then they all headed back towards his boat. Well, that was fine, then. He must know the guys. I guessed they were just friends, then…
Hang on a minute, though… That was a bit weird. They were handing over a briefcase in exchange for something that Nicholas had brought out of his boat. What was that all about? Was Nicholas some sort of dealer? I wouldn’t be half surprised. Private was one thing – but between you and me, he’d always come across as a bit shady as far as I could tell – and a bit creepy, even if he was good looking… Yes, I had a bit of a penchant for dramatizing absolutely everything. Lyle, my once-upon-a-time best friend, was always laughing at me about it…
I stayed where I was, afraid that they might see me. What would they do? If they were bad guys, they might kidnap me or something equally as terrifying. What should I do? My brother, San Antonio had always had a bit of a thing for Nicholas before he and Seth fell in love with each other. I bit my lip, wondering if I should text him.
No.
He and Seth would be far too busy to even notice the message ping, anyway… I sighed. A few months back and I’d have instantly sent one to Lyle, asking him if he’d ever noticed anything strange about Nicholas. He was around here almost as much as he wasn’t back then – but like I said, things change...
I bit my lip as I stood there, warring with myself over what I should do?
I’d always texted Lyle when something interesting was going on. It made me feel less like a snoop and more of an investigator when I had someone to tell.
I’d told Lyle everything over the years. All about Houston and Kem falling for each other and Houston coming out in style to my parents off the back of Austin and Amy’s shock pregnancy… And then I’d confided in him all about Seth and San Antonio shagging right outside my bedroom window in the treehouse…
I sighed. What should I do? This was actually kind of like, real…
I pulled out my phone and my fingers hovered over the keys. Should I text him? Would he reply? Chances were that he’d have blocked me after that very embarrassing, very confusing but very enjoyable (at least for me) kiss the last time we ever saw each other. Screw it. In for a penny and all that shit. With my heart in my mouth that he’d tell me to get lost and leave him alone, I started typing…

Coming Soon...

I wasn’t going to go to prom alone. No way. Not with the outfit I’d got planned. I felt like I was coming out all over again – because even though we’d been dating for a few months, I still hadn’t allowed Karl to see the real me – the one that loved mini skirts and tight tank tops and dresses and high heels and fabulous wigs and make-up. It wasn’t that I didn’t think he’d like it, Karl loved me and he’d love that about me too, I was sure. No, I was just concerned about the way other people would perceive him for dating someone like me.
I didn’t feel as if I’d been born in the wrong body or anything – I knew exactly what my dick was for, I just sometimes felt like a girl and I loved to look like a girl... Dad said I was probably what was referred to as gender-fluid and said I was unique and beautiful for it and had encouraged me to be myself, assuring me that Karl would love me no matter what. Well, prom would be the moment of truth, I guess...
As far as I was concerned, I was going to go on the arm of my beautiful boyfriend and nothing and no one was going to stop me. And if things went to plan, Karl’s parents wouldn’t have a clue he was going with a guy, anyway...
No one at school had ever met my alter-ego, Delilah, before. She’d never been let loose on the general public. She was entirely unknown.
I’d discovered RuPaul’s Drag Race when I was twelve and I’d avidly watched every episode of it. I followed loads of the queens on Instagram. I’d watched everything from how to apply make-up and how to make my hair as realistic as possible, to tucking. I was pretty good at the hair and make-up. I didn’t do the tucking much, since I wasn’t performing or anything but I knew how to do it and I’d practiced enough to know that I could do it, if I wanted to.
“What’s up?”
Karl looked up from where he was nursing a cup of tea in the Year 11’s common room all alone, “Nothing.” He mumbled, “Just not really looking forward to Prom, that’s all.”
I smiled, “am.” I said, sashaying over to him and planting myself down in his lap. Well, there was no one around to see us, “I can’t wait.”
He slipped his arms around me but he was still frowning, “How the hell can you be looking forward to it?” He asked incredulously, “It’s not like we can go together.”
I smiled and leaned in to him, kissing him lightly on the end of his nose, “Of course we’re going together.” I said, feeling slightly surprised by his attitude.
“Don’t be so stupid.” Karl snarled, “I’ve told you what the olds are like.”
I blinked. Surely, he wasn’t giving up that easily? “Trust me, we totally can.” I assured him.
Karl shook his head, “My parents will flip if I take a guy to prom. You know that. You know I’ve never been able to tell them about us.”
I nodded, grinning all over my face, “Just tell them you’re going with a girl, then. Tell them her name is Delilah and that she’s more woman than any other guy will ever be able to handle...”

Check out my new series....

I looked up, “Oh no.” I groaned. There was a tailback of traffic as far as the eye could see.
Dad patted my knee, “It’ll be fine, son. I know a short-cut.”
Well they were famous last words... Dad turned off and headed in the completely wrong direction. I looked around at the unfamiliar streets, “Where are we going, Dad?” I asked in mild panic.
“Your father knows these streets like the back of his hand…” Mum piped up proudly from the back seat.
I snorted as we passed a road sign, “Then why are we headed for Birmingham, right now?” I muttered. Seriously? Asking for help from Dad was sometimes a real challenge.
He grinned and patted my knee reassuringly, “I’ll loop back on the ring road, son. Don’t worry.”
I tried my best to relax. I still had twenty minutes, after all…
We pulled up at the traffic lights and somehow or other, Dad managed to stall the engine. I glared at him. “Are you freaking serious, right now?” I snapped, beginning to lose any remaining patience I was managing to hold on to...

Seth looked at me warily, “Hey, San Antonio.” He said, “How are you?”
I nodded, “I’m good…” I flashed a smile, “Freezing, but good.” It was December and the snow had come early, which was great for business because it turned the marina shopping precinct into a perfect winter-wonderland but having to work outdoors most of the day wasn’t really my idea of a fun time.
He nodded, “Well, this is awkward.” He said, huffing an embarrassed laugh.
I chuckled along with him, all embarrassed, too. “Yeah.” I agreed, “Shall we uh, shall we go and get a drink or something? I could do with something to warm me up. I’m supposed to be cleaning the glass all around the café.” I rolled my eyes, “But I’m likely to get stuck to it in these temperatures rather than get it clean.”
“Jeez,” Seth murmured, “Don’t you guys ever get a day off?”
I shook my head, “Nope.” I said with a laugh, “Even in sub-zero temperatures, we all have to do our chores.”
He fell into step beside me, “Have you thought any more about uh, summer camp?” he asked quietly.
My insides froze. I stopped, “Please.” I said, glancing around nervously, “Don’t. Not here.”
He stood in front of me, “Where, then?” he asked, “Because I’m going crazy here, thinking about it.”
“Treehouse?” I suggested, “It’s right up there in the tree, no one’s evergonna hear us talking up there.”
He looked at the treehouse, “Whose bedroom is that, right behind it?” he asked sceptically.
I snorted, “That’s El Paso’s room – he’s always got his head in a book. He never notices anything– and besides, it’s like, minus five degrees out here. He’ll never have his window open in this weather.”
Seth grinned, “Cool.” He said.

After Tiffany left, I lay on my bed for a good couple of hours just thinking about she’d said. I didn’t much care what she told anyone about me and El Paso. It wasn’t true… or at least, even if it was true that I felt more for him than I’d ever felt for her, it didn’t have to mean in a romantic way. There was no way I felt like that about him – we were just really good friends. She was just sore that I spent a lot of time with him and enjoyed his company.
I was just about to get ready for bed when another text came through.
I scrambled to a sitting position and fumbled for my phone.
All the tension I’d been feeling seemed to just drain away as I read the message.
“Are you still awake?”
I grinned and typed out an immediate reply, “Of course I am.”
“Good. Listen, can I call you instead of texting? I’m not a fan of getting writers’ cramp. I’ve got a better use for my right hand.”He sent an emoji of an aubergine and two laughing faces.
I shook my head. Chuckling to myself I sent back a smiley face. Seconds later, my screen lit up with a picture of El Paso pulling a silly face. I had no idea when he’d added that to my phone but it made me laugh all the same. “Hey, El.” I said.
His breathy voice came through loud and clear, "Lyle!" He exclaimed in a hushed whisper, "There's been a development."

 “Fort Worth!”
My steps faltered in my stilettos as I heard my mother’s voice from one of the upstairs windows. Dammit. What now? If she saw the top I was wearing, I’d be dragged back by my multicoloured wig before I could even take my drag name in vain…
I turned, checking my phone as I did so. The girls were waiting for me…
Mum was stood on the balcony of her bedroom and I could almost see the steam coming out of her ears. I smiled, “Yes?” I asked as sweetly as I could.
“Get back here and put some clothes on!” she yelled, “You’re ten times worse than Georgia was at your age!”
I rolled my eyes. “But Mum.” I whined, “Georgia’s a girl.”
She glowered, “And what the hell do you think you’re dressed as?” she snarled.
Damn it. The woman had a point. I did look a little like a hooker… “Right!” I retorted as dramatically as could pull off, “I’ll put the goddamn jeans and trainers on and totally ruin the lewk,” my voice had risen in frustration and I was now practically screaming at her, “but I’m taking them off and changing into my hot pants and these incredibly hot boots as soon as I get there, so what’s the point?”
The boots were fabulous. They were a shiny, silver thigh-high number with stiletto heels. They were a gift from my fairy drag mother, Honey-Rose Delmonte, who was a queen I followed avidly and had met on a few occasions, and I absolutely loved them – and I absolutely loved Honey-Rose, too; she was a total darling and had asked me to follow her, doing a bit of a vlog and I’d had the most amazing response. Within six weeks I’d attracted more than three hundred thousand followers on Instagram and this outfit had had more than a thousand likes in the first minute of me uploading it earlier.
Still, my followers had no idea that my mother could still ground me until I was about a hundred and fifty years old and so, I was now standing in front of the balcony, my hands on my hips and tapping the toe of my fabulous thigh-high, boots impatiently.

“Go and get Dallas to put a new barrel on, will you?”
I blinked at Jon, the guy who owned the bar, “Huh?” I asked stupidly.
He raised an eyebrow, “You’re not gonna go all moony-eyed on me about the new guy, are you?” he asked.
I shook my head, “No, sir.” I said, feeling my face reddening. Jon knew I was gay and he didn’t half love to rib me about it. Not in an unkind way… Well, not really. “I’ll go and ask him.”
He chuckled, “Ask him to go surfing with you tomorrow.” He said, “He might surprise you and agree.”
Fat chance of that. I’d seen him pushing a buggy with a little boy in it that was the spitting image of him. He was definitely the baby’s dad. There was no way he’d be interested in me. I huffed a laugh, “Sure, sure.” I said, “Jog on.”
Jon raised an eyebrow, “He’s single.” He said, “He told me.”
I rolled my eyes, “he needs to be a bit more than single to want to date me.” I said, “I might be pretty but I’m a guy, or hadn’t you noticed?”
He rolled his eyes, “And he’s not into girls.” He replied in a voice that sounded as if he was talking to a stupid person, “so, just ask him.”
No way… It was too embarrassing. Jon had to have got it wrong. The guy was straight, he was sure of it…
The door to the cellar flew open a few minutes later and a slightly breathless and sweaty looking Dallas manoeuvred himself into the bar, carrying a crate of bottles to restock the fridges. “Slade,” Jon barked, “Give the boy a hand.”
Jeez. Did he have to make it so damned obvious that I was interested? Or maybe it wasn’t obvious to Dallas at all. Maybe it was all in my head and the guy hadn’t even allowed me to invade his thoughts at all.
I tilted my chin towards him in acknowledgement, “Want some help?” I muttered.
He shrugged, “I’ve got it if you’re busy.” He said, “But if I could leave an hour early…” he scratched his neck nervously, “My babysitter just called…”
“Sure.” I jumped in. Anything that gave him that haunted look was something I could definitely help with – not least to never see it again. He was too beautiful to look that stressed out, “I’ll take over your stint at the bar – it’s not busy on a Tuesday anyway.”
He shot me a grateful smile that shook me to my core and made me wonder what the hell it was about him that had me going all squiffy over him. Whatever it was it was like magic – and I wanted more of it… “Thanks, man.” He said, “You’re a lifesaver.”
I grinned at him, “You’ve got a kid, huh?” I asked, “How old?”
He beamed with pride as he started talking about his son, “He’s eight months and he’s just started to stand up and walk around the furniture – it won’t be long and he’ll be walking around. Then I’ll really have to watch him.” He chuckled.
It sounded as if he had sole responsibility of him the way he spoke about it. “So, have you uh, got a girlfriend? Wife?”
He coloured up and shook his head, “No,” he said, “It’s just me and Starr.”
“Star?” I asked. Whoa. That was far out…
He smiled and nodded, “I’m a massive Beatles fan.” He said, “And it just suited him.”
“So, was there a girlfriend?”
He shook his head, “there was a girl. She wasn’t really my girlfriend…. Well, she was but she wasn’t. It’s complicated. I’m not with her anymore. She didn’t want Starr or me – and so, she left.”
Well, that told me everything but nothing… Was he straight?
“Anyone since?” I asked. Yes. I was aware that I was asking far too many questions to say we’d only just spoken to each other today but I was way beyond curious. I was on Interested Highway, heading straight for Besotted Boulevard...
